TISSER LA LUMIERE

2023 – Installation, video, performance

The project “Weaving the Light” is a multidisciplinary endeavor that combines artistic installations, mosaics, tapestry, photography, and video. Inspired by a serendipitous discovery of a beautiful damaged Persian carpet, this project aims to creatively repair the carpet using mirror glass
mosaics. The installation merges traditional patterns of Persian carpets with the traditional Iranian technique of Ayeneh Kâri (the art of mirror glass mosaics).

The underlying idea of this installation is to reflect the duality between tradition and innovation while exploring gender balance in Iranian society undergoing transformation. By replacing damaged portions of the carpet with mirror glass mosaics, the project symbolizes the necessity of gender solidarity to overcome current challenges.

The “Tisser La Lumière” installation presents a series of handwoven Persian carpets suspended vertically within wooden frames. Mirror glass mosaics are integrated into the carpet patterns, creating a unique interplay of reflection and light. This fusion of two traditional art forms offers a fresh perspective on the beauty of Persian art and how these complementary artistic disciplines can create a visual experience that is both traditional and contemporary.

The mirror glass mosaics conceal family photos, including portraits of deceased family members. This personal integration within the art lends deeper significance to the carpet patterns, connecting the installation to family and social history.
The “Tisser La Lumière” project aims to redefine the perception of Iran and the Middle East by highlighting the beauty of Persian art, recalling the necessity of gender solidarity, and creating a captivating artistic experience that integrates ancient traditions within a contemporary context.
